Is a Siberian kitten a good holiday gift, and what should you keep away from it?

A pet for many years, not a wrapped surprise. Home around 12 weeks.

As of Nov 2, 2026: A Siberian or Neva Masquerade kitten is a pet for many years, not a wrapped surprise. We send kittens home at about 12 weeks, and we have no kitten available to reserve for Christmas morning. If a cat is already in your home, lilies and amaryllis are the serious holiday plants; poinsettia and holly are milder. Ribbon and tinsel are their own danger. If you want a kitten from us, join the waitlist for a future litter.

Should you give a kitten as a Christmas gift?

No. The Spruce Pets (updated Feb 25, 2026) says giving a cat as a gift is a bad idea. Their suggestion is to give a collar or a toy and then adopt together after the holidays, so the person who will live with the cat gets to choose it.

The same goes for a cattery reservation. The household that will live with the cat should meet Siberians and talk with us before anyone pays a deposit. Even a kitten that arrives “for Christmas” needs a quiet first week at home, not a party.

When can a Siberian kitten come home?

Our kittens are typically ready for their new homes at 12 weeks. Pickup, delivery, or meet-up is by appointment. Every kitten is $2,000. Details are on Siberian and Neva kitten prices. (Source: our litters data, lastUpdated Nov 2, 2026.)

We won’t promise that a kitten will be home by Dec 25. If a kitten is not already old enough, Christmas is a good time to talk about a reservation, not the day the kitten comes home.

As of Nov 2, 2026, both kittens in our July 4, 2026 litter are reserved. See litters. The waitlist for future litters is open.

Which holiday plants are dangerous for cats?

Catster’s holiday hazards guide (updated Oct 16, 2026) rates the common holiday plants this way:

Lilies show up in a lot of holiday flower arrangements, so check bouquets before they come into the house. The Spruce Pets suggests keeping toxic plants out of the home and using non-toxic plants or silk flowers instead.

This is general pet-safety information, not a diagnosis. If you think your cat has chewed on or eaten a plant, call your vet right away. You can also contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 (a consultation fee may apply) or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 ($99 per-incident fee, per its site).

Ribbon, tinsel, and the tree

Ribbon, tinsel, and garland look like toys to a kitten. Catster says a cat can get tangled in them or swallow them, and a swallowed string can cause severe intestinal damage. Vets call this a linear foreign body. The Spruce Pets recommends paper bows or thick cloth ribbon instead of loose tinsel and string.

For the tree, The Spruce Pets says to cover the water in the tree stand. It can contain pesticides, fertilizer, or other chemicals. Aluminum foil works. Keep fragile ornaments high, and think about putting the tree in a room you can close off.

Catster also lists candles and electrical cords. Keep candles out of reach and never leave them burning unsupervised. Hang lights up high and secure loose cords so a kitten can’t chew them.

Which holiday foods should a cat not eat?

Catster flags these foods:

Skip the turkey skin and gravy as a “treat.” If your cat eats something it shouldn’t, contact your vet.
